A conflict arose in Rayagada district, Odisha, as a result of disagreements regarding a road construction project, leading to a violent clash on Tuesday. The altercation, which took place in Sagbari village, resulted in more than 30 police officers and several villagers sustaining injuries. The tension stemmed from a road development initiative in Sagbari, aimed at providing better access to a proposed mining site in the Sijimali region.
In response to the unrest, authorities implemented restrictions on public gatherings to prevent further escalation of the situation. The road construction, undertaken by a private company, was met with opposition from some members of the local tribal community who raised concerns about potential adverse effects on their land, environment, and livelihoods.
The situation turned chaotic when police forces intervened to engage with the protesters and maintain law and order. Despite initial attempts at dialogue, the situation escalated as agitated villagers reportedly began throwing stones at the security personnel, resulting in injuries on both sides. Notably, senior police officers, including the Sub-Divisional Police Officer of Rayagada and the Inspector-in-Charge of Kashipur police station, were among those injured.
Several injured police personnel, with at least seven in critical condition, are currently receiving treatment at the district headquarters hospital in Rayagada, while others are being treated at the Kashipur Community Health Centre. To restore order and prevent further disturbances, additional police forces have been deployed by the district administration, with senior officials closely monitoring the situation on the ground.
Despite the road construction being part of a government-approved mining project, local opposition persists due to concerns about potential displacement and environmental harm. To manage the situation, prohibitory orders have been enforced in the affected village under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita. While tensions remain high, efforts are underway to de-escalate the situation and avoid further confrontations.
