“Survivor of Canada’s Deadliest Mass Shooter Speaks Out”

National"Survivor of Canada's Deadliest Mass Shooter Speaks Out"

Lisa Banfield, after enduring years of abuse from her partner, Gabriel Wortman, who later carried out a mass shooting in Nova Scotia in 2020, has broken her silence to shed light on intimate partner violence. Despite facing criticism from some of the victims’ families, Banfield, a survivor of intimate partner violence, has decided to speak out to raise awareness about the issue.

In her book titled “The First Survivor: Life With Canada’s Deadliest Mass Shooter,” Banfield recounts her relationship with Wortman and the events leading up to the tragic mass shooting. The book also delves into Banfield’s past experiences with violence, including being molested at a young age and the dynamics within her family.

According to trauma therapist Kristina Fifield, Banfield’s story underscores the importance of addressing gender-based violence and implementing early intervention programs to prevent violence. The therapist emphasizes the need to target high-risk individuals, particularly boys and men who have experienced abuse in their past.

Banfield’s narrative reveals a pattern of escalating violence and coercive control in her relationship with Wortman. Initially, he appeared loving and attentive, but over time, he became controlling and abusive, isolating Banfield from her family and exerting financial control over her.

On the night of the mass shooting, Wortman subjected Banfield to physical and verbal abuse before setting fire to their home and embarking on his violent rampage. Banfield managed to escape and hide in the woods, enduring fear and uncertainty while grappling with survivor’s guilt in the aftermath of the tragedy.

Despite facing backlash and stigma in the community, Banfield’s story has sparked discussions about victim-blaming and the need for a more trauma-informed approach to supporting survivors of domestic violence. Both Banfield and Fifield hope that sharing Banfield’s story will empower other women to recognize and address unhealthy relationship dynamics.

The release of Banfield’s book has triggered mixed reactions from the victims’ families, with some expressing discomfort and feeling overshadowed by the attention on Banfield. However, Banfield remains resolute in her mission to raise awareness about intimate partner violence and advocate for systemic changes in how society perceives and supports survivors.
