Bell Canada has achieved a significant milestone in its satellite-to-mobile coverage initiative by completing the construction of a ground station in Quebec. The telecommunications company had previously announced plans to offer space-based cellular service in collaboration with AST SpaceMobile, a Texas-based company utilizing low-earth orbit satellites.
The ground station facility in Quebec is now operational and undergoing testing to connect with AST SpaceMobile’s satellite constellation. This connection will integrate Bell’s space-based cellular broadband network with its existing terrestrial network, forming a crucial part of the Canadian infrastructure to support direct-to-device satellite service.
Integration testing at the ground station has been successful, including tests for text messaging, data connectivity, voice calls, and video calls using standard smartphones. Further testing for video streaming, public alerts, and additional features is scheduled in the upcoming weeks.
The primary objective of this technology is to provide connectivity to Bell customers in areas where traditional wireless networks are not accessible, such as remote coastal regions and northern communities. Bell aims to launch its satellite coverage early next year to fulfill this purpose.
Mark McDonald, Bell’s executive vice-president and chief technology officer, emphasized the significance of the satellite ground infrastructure in extending connectivity to underserved areas. Together with Bell’s established wireless network, this initiative will ensure customers remain connected regardless of their location.
AST SpaceMobile’s chief commercial officer, Chris Ivory, assured customers of a seamless connectivity experience on their smartphones once the service is operational. This project is crucial for addressing the unique geographical challenges in Canada and extending cellular broadband coverage to areas beyond traditional terrestrial infrastructure.
In a similar move, competitor Rogers Communications Inc. had launched its satellite-to-mobile service in partnership with SpaceX last year. This service combined Rogers’ wireless network with Starlink’s low-earth orbit satellites to provide connectivity in areas with poor cell reception. Rogers has been gradually expanding its service offerings, including enabling traditional cellphone calls and emergency services like 911.
The efforts by both Bell and Rogers highlight the growing importance of satellite technology in bridging connectivity gaps and ensuring seamless communication for customers across diverse geographical landscapes.
