Canada’s debut in the 2027 Eurovision Song Contest has thrilled fans of extravagant talent shows and quirky musical performances. The announcement came shortly after CBC’s full membership in the European Broadcasting Union was confirmed. Marie-Philippe Bouchard, president and CEO of CBC/Radio-Canada, expressed excitement about bringing this massive live music event to Canadians.

The upcoming 71st edition of the event will be hosted by Bulgaria next year, serving as a platform for aspiring songwriters, singers, and musicians. The Eurovision Song Contest is renowned for its flamboyant costumes, pyrotechnics, and eccentric performances that captivate audiences worldwide.

In the past, Canada has shown a strong interest in the contest, ranking in the Top 3 countries in the “Rest of the World” vote. Many Canadians even traveled to Vienna, Austria, to witness the semi-finals and grand final live. Martin Green, director of the Eurovision Song Contest, welcomed CBC/Radio-Canada to the Eurovision family, emphasizing the event’s global appeal.

Notably, Céline Dion’s victory in the 1988 Eurovision Song Contest for Switzerland marked a pivotal moment in her career. Other Canadians, such as Natasha St-Pier and La Zarra, have also participated in the competition over the years.

While the Eurovision Song Contest has faced controversies, including boycotts by certain countries, Canada’s inclusion as the first new country since Australia in 2015 signifies a significant milestone. CBC/Radio-Canada will release further details on Canada’s selection process for the contest later this year.
