Statistics Canada has released data for 2025 showing a significant shift in Canadian travel patterns with the United States. The number of Canadian vehicles traveling to and from the U.S. dropped by 30.9% compared to 2024. This decline in cross-border travel coincided with trade tensions and a Buy Canadian movement, though experts refrain from speculating on the exact reasons behind the steep decrease.
Laura Presley, a data analyst at Statistics Canada, emphasized the unprecedented nature of the 2025 decline, noting that such substantial and prolonged drops are rare in Canadian history. The Canada Border Services Agency processed 17 million Canadian vehicles at the U.S. border in 2025, down from 24.6 million in 2024, marking a decrease of approximately 7.6 million vehicles.
Additionally, American residents entering Canada also saw a decline of 6.3% from the previous year. While the national data reflected a significant decrease in cross-border traffic, specific crossings like Windsor-Detroit experienced relatively lesser declines. The Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, for instance, reported only a 4.5% decrease in traffic from 2024 to 2025, attributing this to factors such as cross-border employment opportunities and the affordability of travel to the U.S. from Windsor.
Tal Czudner, CEO of the Windsor-Detroit Tunnel, highlighted the tunnel’s success in mitigating the impact of reduced cross-border travel, mentioning factors like proximity, affordability, and the strong influence of Detroit sports team fandom on travel decisions. This localized resilience contrasts with the broader national trend of decreased cross-border travel between Canada and the U.S.
