Hospitals in major cities in Saskatchewan are set to implement a new security measure that involves the use of metal detectors at their entrances. The initiative aims to enhance safety by reducing violence and the presence of weapons in emergency departments. Following a successful pilot program at Royal University Hospital and Jim Pattison Children’s Hospital, the Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) is planning to introduce metal detectors at hospitals in Saskatoon and Regina.
Although the SHA has not disclosed the exact launch date or the specific hospitals that will receive the metal detectors, they have emphasized their commitment to ensuring the safety and security of patients, visitors, and healthcare teams in emergency departments. David Musyj, a supervisor at the London Health Sciences Centre in Ontario, highlighted the effectiveness of AI metal detection technology in enhancing security within hospitals.
While some experts suggest that metal detectors alone may not be the ultimate solution to addressing violence and weapon-related incidents in healthcare settings, they acknowledge that when combined with other security measures such as security guards, cameras, and panic alarms, they can significantly reduce the risks associated with such incidents. The SHA has indicated that more details about the metal detection initiative will be revealed in the near future.
