Manchester United has secured the services of their former player, Harry Maguire, with the announcement of a new one-year contract that includes the option for an additional year extension. The veteran central defender, aged 33, had his previous contract set to expire at the end of the current season.
Maguire made a high-profile move from Leicester City to Manchester United in 2019 for a record-breaking fee of £80 million, establishing him as the most expensive defender at that time. During his time at the club, he has amassed 266 appearances, contributing significantly to Manchester United’s League Cup victory in the 2022-23 season and their subsequent FA Cup triumph.
Expressing his commitment to the club, Maguire stated, “Representing Manchester United is the ultimate honour. It is a responsibility that makes myself and my family proud every single day. I am delighted to extend my journey at this incredible club to at least eight seasons and continue to play in front of our special supporters to create more amazing moments together.”
Despite facing challenges during his tenure at Old Trafford, including being appointed captain shortly after his arrival and enduring periods of criticism under various managers, Maguire’s dedication to the team has remained steadfast. In a notable incident in April 2022, Cheshire Police conducted a search at Maguire’s residence following a bomb threat, which later led to a decline in his status within the club under Erik ten Hag. Although a potential transfer to West Ham United was on the table, Maguire chose to remain loyal to Manchester United.
Following a period of limited opportunities under Ruben Amorim, Maguire has experienced a resurgence under interim manager Michael Carrick, featuring in all ten matches since Carrick took charge in mid-January.
