Following the resignation of Campbell Wilson, Air India is in the process of selecting a new CEO. Tata Group’s chairman, N Chandrasekaran, has addressed the airline’s employees, encouraging them to maintain focus on achieving results and not be discouraged by criticism. Despite the challenges faced by the airline, Chandrasekaran expressed confidence in its long-term prospects.
Since Tata Group regained ownership of Air India in 2022, the airline has been implementing an ambitious turnaround plan involving fleet modernization, mergers, and global expansion. However, the journey towards transformation has been hindered by financial constraints, safety-related regulatory scrutiny, operational hurdles, and the lingering impact of the Ahmedabad air crash.
Chandrasekaran emphasized the importance of disciplined execution as the immediate priority. He advised the staff to concentrate on areas within their control, enhance cost efficiency, and maintain a realistic outlook. Safety was highlighted as a non-negotiable aspect influencing all operational decisions.
With over 17,000 new employees, consolidation of airlines, fleet enhancement, and network optimization, Air India has made significant progress under Tata Group’s ownership. The search for a new CEO is underway following Wilson’s departure after a tenure marked by challenges and transformation efforts.
While acknowledging the difficulties faced, Chandrasekaran commended Wilson for advancements made during his time as CEO. The investigation into the Ahmedabad crash is ongoing, with the final report expected in June. Additionally, the low-cost subsidiary, Air India Express, is also undergoing leadership changes following the departure of its Managing Director.
