Ruth Jones McVeigh, one of the founders of the esteemed Mariposa Folk Festival in Canada, has passed away at the age of 99. Jones McVeigh, who passed away in Ottawa, was instrumental in establishing the enduring annual music festival, which has overcome various challenges over the years to become one of the longest-running folk festivals in North America.

Renowned artists such as Gordon Lightfoot, Joni Mitchell, Leonard Cohen, and Bob Dylan have graced the festival stages since its inception in 1961. Former festival artistic director Michael Hill credits Jones McVeigh for the festival’s widespread recognition and cultural significance.

Jones McVeigh, a former journalist and folk music enthusiast, originally from Halifax, ventured into festival organization after being inspired by a motivational speaker in early 1961. Over the years, Mariposa Folk Festival has transitioned through different venues, attracting a diverse array of performers from Ian & Sylvia to Serena Ryder.

Despite facing financial challenges in 1987, Jones McVeigh’s dedication and passion for the festival ensured its survival.
